Timber framing is Carolina Timberworks’ passion and specialty. We work with architects and general contractors (and occasionally the right homeowner) across North Carolina and the United States to provide architectural timber framing for various residential and commercial projects.
Timber framing is a traditional method of building with heavy timbers that has been continuously in use for almost two thousand years. To be candid, we’re drawn to and love the timber frame. It’s the best, longest-lasting, and most beautiful way to build we know of.

No one truly needs a timber frame.
Just like no one needs a meticulously crafted Swiss mechanical watch when a digital one keeps better time. Or an original Van Gogh, when a print would suffice to decorate a wall.
The practicality of timber frame and post and beam construction isn’t the primary appeal. Timber framing is an architectural solution to a structural problem.

Nailing Down A Dream
We spend our whole lives dreaming about what comes next–from where to raise a family to where to enjoy some hard-earned relaxation. The custom home building process starts with a dream. The owners find the right architect to define the dream and the right builder to manifest the dream.

A Pursley Dixon Architecture English-inspired summer retreat perches proudly on a mountainside. This sanctuary–consisting of multiple porches, balconies, and linear room arrangements–ensures breathtaking views of the National Forest and beyond.
From a timber framer’s perspective, it’s a work of art: A majestic, cantilevered terrace supported by massive timber brackets and impossibly slender cantilevered joists made possible by engineered structural steel artfully concealed inside Western Red Cedar timber framing.
Supported by pairs of 9′ tall brackets, the timber deck joists taper gracefully to slender profiles as they reach further and further out over the gorge–making those not privy to the secret ask: “How did they do that?”
